Gottfried "Fred" and Sophie Schweigert Krohn
From Scott:
Fred and Sophie, and no doubt the rest of the clan, were pretty
self-sufficient folks. Fred could make anything and did. tables,
chairs, knives, etc. When he was through with it, he would take
out his punches and stamp the dates into them to see how long they
would last. I think I still have a knife or two around here.
Grandpa [Fred] Krohn was also some what of a technophobe. He decided
that phones were bad and had his removed and never got another one.
Another mystery was why he gave up on automobiles. He had a few classics,
but he had quit driving long before I was born.
Grandpa and Grandma [Fred & Sophie] were the host/hostess for a boatload
(sorry for the pun) of relatives when they arrived in the northwest. they
were also the bankers, helping them to get started. rumor had it that not
all of the loans were repaid. they also used to routinely get hit on by
relatives still in russia, that continued until the stalin purges sent
the germans off to siberia, maybe after.
[Editor's note: this was a common custom among many immigrant groups.]
Maybe the best story i have about grandpa and grandma krohn involved
their value of an american education. I don't think Mary and Martha
spoke english until they went off to school, after that, they only
spoke german to conceal the truth from the kids. anyway, mary and
martha had german measles. Sophie, knowing what was wrong with them,
bundled them up and covered them with scarves, long sleeves, and
leggings, in an attempt to conceal their illness from the school
authorities.
The Schweigerts and Krohns (Krons) go back to the same areas, spanning
generations. If you go back, you will find both families in Washington
and BC, Saskatchewan and Montana, Karlsru(he,) and likely well before
that. They were migrating with each other for 100 years or whatever.
I'm noting this because you might be able to find other ancestors using
this little bit of trivia.
Between Scott & his sister Marilyn
-
Marilyn: I thought they all migrated to the same villiage in Russia
from the same villiage in Germany (because of religious issues...
being the religious minority I think). Group must have been large
because Fred and Sophie reportedly did not know each other until they
were in Canada.
- Scott: actually, there were a few villages in between Russia
and Germany and also according to Jalanne, the tree goes back to
Switzerland prior to that.
- Scott: Fred and Sophie were just kids when they left, that's
why they didn't know each other.
- Marilyn: Yes, I had heard the stories about Great Grandpa
John Kron all along and read about the same stories that someone sent
me from one of the ancestry sites...Jalanne put them there? What I
found interesting was how their side of the family told the same
stories with more or less the same details. Its like a special type
of folklore...the story of families and would make a fascinating topic
for a book.
